Tourism
Tourism
is doing a good job -
I'm a fervent ambassador for Jersey wherever I am, but I don't charge
anyone for that! I'm delighted to do it. I've also been a tourist. As
part of my "crapaud exile" existence, I've made regular visits back
to the Island - and as a tourist, you see it from a slightly different
perspective, which has been quite useful. I think Tourism is doing a
pretty good job - they have some very bright people down there and they're
coming up with some very bright ideas. I've just been on one of their
organised Autumn Ambles, which I think is an excellent initiative. This
is the sort of thing they are doing more and more of. There were Dutch
journalists and people from the UK, as well as locals, who had come
specifically to do a spot of bird-watching, for example. These are ideas
which are working.
The crossovers with Tourism
- I think we need to see how Tourism meshes with other Jersey industries.
We need an overview, we need to make sure that the money's being spent
to the maximum advantage. I think that those initiatives are working
and I'm pleased to see that. We are developing a brand image of Jersey
and that isn't just a Tourism feature, but extends into other areas
such as Agriculture. I admit there are probably one or two hoteliers
who could do with getting out a bit more and seeing what other hotels
do in other countries. I'm not convinced that the trouser press and
instant coffee is going to be the big Tourism feature of the future.
It's a developing process, so let's keep up with the pace.
